Six Steps to Developing a Unique Sense of Style: Seek Inspiration
This lovely photo is from The Sartorialist archives. This blog is my go-to for inspiration on a daily basis. He photographs people all over the world, all ages, races, and sizes. I am ever impressed with the beauty this man finds in our everyday world. Please note when looking through his blog full of inspirational photos of glorious people, the subtle points of style, often simply involve some cool shoes or bright pop of color.
Step 3: Seek Inspiration
Now that you have made room for some fresh looks that best represent your true self, it is time to find those great pieces.
Looking for inspiration is the best part. I do not necessarily mean shop. First, it is important to have a clear idea in your mind about what you love. I recommend creating a Style Notebook. Look through magazines. They do not have to be fashion magazines. In fact, art, sports, health, lifestyle, interior design, or travel magazines will do – both old and new. Try international magazines too. Google images of people whose style you admire and print off the photos, preferably in color. This could be Beyoncé, Jennifer Lawrence, Audrey Hepburn, or a famous athlete. Make sure they represent the perfect image of style in your mind. Take these photos and put them in a notebook – writing notes about why you like the photo. I use an 8″ by 10″ sketchbook to hold all my inspirational photos. Creating Pinterest boards is a great way to start this process of identifying your style also. Following people on Pinterest will give you a window into what other people like who have similar tastes.
Your Goal is to Find Your Authentic Style
Remember the goal is to find your authentic style. These images have to be fantastic representations, not just something you sort of like. Look for photos of colors you love, hairstyles you admire, places and things that inspire you.
Your Style Notebook should be something you continue to add to throughout your life. Sometimes, just having the image of something satisfies the need to have it. Also, this notebook often turns out to be a tool for manifesting what you want in your life. Early in my life I put a picture of a woman with long blonde hair in my notebook. I loved her look. I have light brown, naturally curly hair and had no idea people bleached their hair to achieve a blonde look. Perhaps ten years later, when I was perusing my old style notebooks, I came upon that picture and looked very much like her with long blonde hair.
