Measured Anew
“Because to be treated as a boy was to be taken on the old footing. I had become a new person; and those who knew the old person laughed at me. The only man who behaved sensibly was my tailor; he took my measurements anew every time he saw me, whilst all the rest went on with their old measurements and expected them to fit me.” Bernard Shaw from Man and Superman
After all the self-improvement work we do, we hope people recognize the new and improved version of our self rather than the old us. This quote is an excerpt from my high school journal. We are encouraged by Eckhart Tolle, in his book The Power of Now to live in the present moment. This means meeting everyone where they are this very day, rather than how they have been in the past. This is not always easy to do. It doesn’t mean you are going to like someone better now than in the past. It just asks that you refrain from pre-judgement and stay open to a new experience. Here are a few things you can say at the beginning of the day:
- I will see everything and everyone with new eyes
- I am open to experiencing something new and surprising today
- People we see the “new me” and appreciate how I have improved
